Jürgen Klopp reflected on Liverpool's recent impressive form – and why it is merely the foundation for the rest of the season – at his pre-match press conference on Friday.

Ahead of the Premier League meeting with Swansea City, the manager took questions from the media on a variety of topics, including the Reds’ run of 18 matches without defeat and how to maintain their level following last weekend’s win over Manchester City.

On guarding against complacency on Monday…

Life is a summary of challenges and that’s a big challenge. We played against top-of-the-table Manchester City and played a fantastic game. We played Swansea a few weeks ago with a caretaker-manager and I said after the game it was much more difficult than the result could make you think. So we know about the specific challenge in this game. They are bottom of the table but they are in a good way. What you have seen since the new manager has come in is a big improvement again: much better results and they won their FA Cup replay during the week. They are doing well and that’s all we think about.

I’m not even sure if we’ll have a look at our game against Swansea because it will be different. We need to have a look at the games since they changed their manager. That’s a challenge, to be honest. But if you know about a challenge you can be prepared for it. That’s my job to do: that we go there and don’t think about the 5-0 or Man City, only think about what we have to do to keep them away from our goal and be as often as possible in front of their goal. It’s on Monday night, there are still a few days to go and hopefully we can make the choice for the line-up from pretty much a full squad. Then let’s go there and use the basis of the season so far. It’s clear we go there and we want to win. But we know about the difficulty.

On extending the Reds’ 18-match unbeaten run…

If nobody told me how often we didn’t lose, I’d have no idea about it. That’s all the past and I’m not really interested. You can look back on a season after the season, not during. It’s not important. We feel in a good moment. I see the boys training every day and it looks good, that’s the truth, that’s why we can play like we played so far. But we have to do it again. As a Liverpool player you cannot perform one week and then two weeks not – we need to deliver consistently, every day and each game.

It’s only the next game and I can’t imagine any easy games in the Premier League. And Swansea is for sure not an easy game; it’s a long trip, we fly to Cardiff, drive to Swansea, you don’t want to do that, and then we come back at night. So it’s not a friendly game, not for one second. It’s a really tough Premier League game. We will have had enough time on Monday to prepare for the game. We are still doing that, with very important sessions to come this week. As long as we have enough fit players, we want to go there and win the game, with all the things we know about.

On the team continuing their form in the remainder of the season…

The boys played a few pieces of fantastic football already this season. But we have a strong team and a strong squad – a skilled squad – and so we need to win football games. To win football games you need to perform, that’s what we did, but nothing else. This is the decisive part; what we did so far is the basis for the rest of the season. Now we need to be ready again. We should not forget the not-so-good things but for sure not the really good things. We have to use them as tools.

We are longer together now, that always helps. But it’s an outstandingly strong league, especially the fight for the top positions. It’s really hard because everybody needs to play like a champion to stay there. If you give a little bit away then the next one is immediately there and can get you. It’s very interesting. Our first job is to collect points – we did it a few times. The next job is to make our fans happy. If we can combine that, it’s a pretty good situation. We did it last week and we have to try it again on Monday.
